Wood, Woakes, Brook keeps England’s Ashes hopes alive as they win the third test

The third Ashes test was a close call for both the teams but England prevailed at the end of the day in the third test at Headingley, Leeds on 9 July 2023. After losing in the first two tests, the England team won the third test and kept the series at 2-1 with Australia in the lead. The next time these two teams will face each other is 19 July for the fourth test at Old Trafford, Manchester.

The third test started with England winning the toss and choosing to field. There were some changes in both teams before the third test. In the Australian lineup Mitchell Marsh came in place of Cameron Green, Todd Murphy came in place of Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland came in place of Josh Hazlewood. For the England team, Mark Wood came in place of Ollie Pope, Moenn Ali came in place of Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes came in place of James Anderson.

The Australian openers departed in the early stage of the match but Mitchell Marsh came to bat and scored 118 runs keeping his team alive in the first innings. Mark Wood came as a surprise for the Australian team and bagged 5 wickets, Chris Woakes bagged 3 wickets and Stuart Broad bagged 2 wickets in the first innings. For the England innings, the captain Ben Stokes played a knock of 80 runs and keep the trail to 26 runs at the end of the innings. Pat Cummins bagged 6 wickets for his team while Mitchell Starc got 2 wickets, and Murphy and MArsh got 1 wicket each in the first innings.  In the second innings Ausralia managed to give a target of 225 to England with Khawaja and Travis Head scoring 43 and 77 respectively. Broad and Woakes both got 3 wickets each and Moenn Ali and Mark Wood both got 2 wickets each in the second innings. The England team chased the target with Crawley scoring 44 runs,  Harry Brook scoring 75 runs and Chrish Woakes (32*) who scored the winning runs for his team. The Autralian bowlers gave a tough fight with Mitchell Starc bagging 5 wickets and Marsh and ummins bagged 1 wicket each but were not able to take the win for their team.

Mark Wood was nominated as the player of the match for his excellent bowling in both the innings.
