Sri Lanka’s cricket team faced another setback as ODI skipper Kusal Mendis landed in trouble, earning three demerit points and a 50 percent match-fee fine for a Level 2 offence.
The incident occurred after the third match against Bangladesh when Mendis “abused the umpires while shaking hands with them” at the conclusion of the game.
Mendis’s actions breached article 2.13 of the Code, which deals with “Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.” Remarkably, this marks Mendis’s first offence within a 24-month period.
Both Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga, who also faced disciplinary action, admitted their offences and agreed to the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
This development adds to Sri Lanka’s challenges as they navigate through a crucial period in international cricket.
