After a disappointing defeat in the first T20I at Bay Oval, where conditions heavily favoured the bowlers, South Africa national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team met again for the second clash at Seddon Park.
South Africa won the toss and once again opted to field first, backing their bowling attack to exploit early conditions. However, both teams were forced into multiple changes due to injuries. New Zealand were without Bevon Jacobs (knee injury) and Ish Sodhi, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the series. This led to inclusions such as Lockie Ferguson and Josh Clarkson, while Zakary Foulkes missed out. South Africa also suffered a setback, with Jordan Hermann ruled out, prompting Wiaan Mulder’s inclusion.
New Zealand’s innings began cautiously, with Devon Conway and Tom Latham focusing on stability rather than aggression in the powerplay, mindful of their previous collapse. The pair ensured a steady start before Latham fell for 10 off 11 balls to Keshav Maharaj.
Conway held the innings together, stitching together a useful 37-run stand with Kelly. After Kelly’s dismissal, skipper Mitchell Santner added quick 20-odd runs to maintain momentum. However, wickets at regular intervals slowed New Zealand’s progress. Jimmy Neesham struggled to accelerate, managing just 8 runs off 11 balls.
Conway was the standout performer, scoring a composed 60 off 49 deliveries, including five boundaries and two sixes. Late contributions from Clarkson and the lower order helped New Zealand reach a competitive total of 175.
For South Africa, Mulder impressed with two wickets, while Maharaj, George Linde, Coetzee, and Baartman chipped in with one wicket each.
With a strong batting lineup featuring several power hitters, South Africa will now look to chase down 175 and level the series in what promises to be an exciting second innings.
