India’s veteran batter Rohit Sharma is set to continue as India’s Test captain for the upcoming five-match series against England in June. Despite speculation over his future following series defeats against New Zealand and Australia, Rohit has retained the backing of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selection committee.
According to reports, India’s Champions Trophy victory under Rohit’s leadership played a crucial role in ensuring his continuity as the Test skipper. A BCCI official stated that every stakeholder, including selectors and team management, felt that Rohit remains the best candidate to lead India in England.
BCCI backs Rohit despite uncertainty
As per a report from The Indian Express, sources close to the selection committee confirmed that Rohit has expressed his eagerness to continue playing red-ball cricket and remains motivated to lead the team for another marquee overseas tour.
“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source told the publication.
Speculation over Rohit’s future
Earlier, there was uncertainty about Rohit’s Test captaincy after he opted out of the fifth Test against Australia, fueling speculation that the selectors were already looking for a new leader. However, his impressive leadership in the Champions Trophy 2025 triumph seems to have cemented his position for the England tour.
Rohit had previously dismissed talks of stepping away from Test cricket, clarifying that his decision to miss the final Test against Australia was purely due to a lack of runs. He reiterated his commitment to all formats of the game following the Champions Trophy win.
“There is no guarantee that runs won’t come five or two months down the line. Life changes every second, every minute, every day. I have confidence in myself that things can change, but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well,” Rohit said in an interview with Star Sports.
With the England series set to begin in June 2025, Rohit will have another opportunity to prove his leadership as India aims for its first Test series victory in England since 2007.
