MS Dhoni is set to return in the iconic yellow of Chennai Super Kings for the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League, amid growing speculation that the season could mark the final chapter of his legendary career.

In 278 IPL matches, Dhoni has amassed 5,439 runs at a strike rate of 137.45. Beyond his batting, he remains one of the most influential leaders in the tournament’s history, having guided CSK to five IPL titles. He also holds the record for the most wicketkeeper dismissals in the league, underlining his all-round impact on the format.

The Chennai Super Kings will host the ROAR ’26 fan event at MA Chidambaram Stadium on 22 March. The evening will feature a live performance by A. R. Rahman, alongside an exhibition contest in which a reunion of OG Super Kings — including Raina, Hayden, Murali Vijay, and Subramaniam Badrinath — will take on the current squad. The franchise has described the event as a tribute to the journey of the club and its supporters.

Off the field, CSK have already begun planning for life beyond Dhoni. Ruturaj Gaikwad took over captaincy duties in 2024, signalling a gradual transition in leadership. The introduction of the Impact Player rule has played a key role in extending Dhoni’s career, allowing him to contribute with short but crucial cameos in the final overs whilst managing his physical workload.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has maintained that Dhoni is expected to play all matches this season. Yet Dhoni’s own remarks about “seeing how the body feels” suggest he is carefully managing his fitness whilst possibly eyeing one final push for a record sixth IPL title.

Now 44, Dhoni is preparing for his 19th IPL season and has been seen mentoring younger players, including Sanju Samson and Gaikwad. Observers believe his involvement this season goes beyond performance, as he looks to shape the next generation and oversee the transition of responsibilities within the team.

Whether this season marks the end or not, one thing remains certain — fans will celebrate “Thala” with the same fervour that has defined his journey since the very beginning.
