After the recent victory of Gujarat Titans over Sunrisers Hyderabad, the chances of Mumbai Indians (MI) qualifying for the playoffs have improved. However, MI still has to win both of their remaining matches to ensure a safe passage into the playoffs. In their upcoming games, MI will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
If MI manages to win both matches, they will finish with 18 points, guaranteeing a top-two finish. This would secure their qualification for the playoffs. However, if MI loses one of their games and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wins their last game, MI will end up with 16 points. In this scenario, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) will have an opportunity to equal MI’s points, and the net run rate (NRR) will come into play.
Furthermore, if LSG wins both their matches against MI and Kolkata Knight Riders (KK), they will surpass MI in the standings. This would leave the five-time champions fighting for the final playoff spot with RCB and PBKS. However, if RCB and PBKS both suffer a loss in their remaining games, MI will hold on to the final playoff spot, even if they lose one of their games.
On the other hand, if MI loses both their remaining matches, LSG will leapfrog them in the standings. In addition, RCB and PBKS could potentially push MI further back with two wins or even one win each.
The remaining matches for Mumbai Indians are as follows:
– May 16: vs Lucknow Super Giants
– May 21: vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
It is a critical juncture for MI as they strive to secure their place in the playoffs. With two crucial matches ahead, they must bring their best performance to the field and ensure victory to solidify their position in the top four. The outcome of these matches will determine whether the defending champions can successfully defend their title and continue their pursuit of glory in the IPL.
