Shubman Gill fined after Gujarat Titans edge Delhi Capitals in tight finish
Shubman Gill has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during Gujarat Titans’ narrow one-run win over Delhi Capitals, a game that went right down to the last over. It was a tense contest throughout, with Gujarat holding their nerve in the final moments to secure their first win of the season.
The match had several key phases, with both sides in the contest until the end. Gujarat posted a competitive total and managed to defend it in a close finish, giving Gill’s side a much-needed early boost in the tournament. However, the slow over rate meant the win was followed by a fine for the captain.
With the match getting tighter in the final overs, time management appeared to slip, especially with pacers operating and frequent field adjustments. As a result, Gujarat were also penalised on the field, with an extra fielder brought inside the circle for the final over due to the slow over rate.
Gill fined as Shreyas Iyer faces bigger risk under IPL rules
The fine is Gill’s first offence this season, and he faces no immediate threat of suspension. The IPL follows a strict system where the first offence leads to a ₹12 lakh fine for the captain, the second to ₹24 lakh and team penalties, and a third offence results in a ₹30 lakh fine along with a one-match ban.
Shreyas Iyer, leading Punjab Kings, has already been fined twice in this tournament and is now one offence away from a ₹30 lakh penalty and a one-match suspension. The repeated breaches have put him in a tight spot under the league’s rules.
For Gill, the focus will now be on maintaining momentum after the win while ensuring Gujarat avoid further over-rate issues in upcoming matches.
