Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and chose to bat first, with rain around adding some uncertainty to conditions. Stand-in decisions were evident early as Ajinkya Rahane opted to put runs on the board in a potentially interrupted game.

There was visible urgency in the KKR camp before the start. Head coach Abhishek Nayar addressed the players in a long huddle, with animated instructions as the side prepared to adapt to sudden changes.

Injuries and illness force reshuffle

KKR were forced into two changes ahead of the match. Varun Chakaravarthy has been ruled out after picking up an injury while taking a catch in the previous game. Sunil Narine also misses out due to illness.

Navdeep Saini comes into the side in place of Chakaravarthy, while Rovman Powell replaces Narine. The changes leave KKR without two of their regular options, especially in the spin department.

The decision to bat first, despite the missing players, suggests KKR are backing their batting unit to set up the game. However, the absence of Chakaravarthy and Narine could test their bowling depth later, particularly if conditions favour spin. This is the first time since 2019 that KKR will take the field without both Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy.

No Varun and no Narine for KKR tonight. With Harshit and Pathirana already injured, that’s four of their five original starting XI bowlers missing, and Green not bowling, KKR are in serious trouble.

Ajinjkya Rahane: We are going to bat first. Looks a good wicket. Little bit on the dry side. But looks very good wicket. Slightly less grass on the surface that’s why we want to bat first.

Shreyas Iyer: Our (Shreyas and Ponting) chemistry blossomed from our Delhi Capitals days. He gives freedom to all the youngsters and he is an inspiration himself. Same team for us.
