IPL 2023: RCB captain Faf du Plessis fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining slow over rate in defeat against LSG

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis has been fined ₹12 lakh for failing to maintain an unacceptable slow-over rate during his team’s last-ball defeat against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 10. In addition to the on-field penalty for their slow over rate, Bangalore was also forced to have an additional fielder inside the circle and could only have four players on the boundary line for the final over. Avesh Khan, the No.11 batsman for LSG, was also found to have breached the Code of Conduct by throwing his helmet on the ground after completing the winning run, and has admitted to a Level 1 offense.

The statement read:

“The Royal Challengers Bangalore have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 15 against the Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Monday. As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, captain Faf du Plessis was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”

The statement continued:

“Lucknow Super Giants’ Avesh Khan has been reprimanded for breaching the Code of Conduct. Mr Avesh admitted to level 1 offence 2.2 of IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction.”

The RCB vs LSG game at M Chinnaswamy Stadium was a dramatic match in IPL history, breaking multiple records and having a change of momentum in every delivery. LSG chose to bowl first, and despite Virat Kohli’s quick 50-run stand, he was eventually dismissed by Amit Mishra. Faf du Plessis smashed the longest six of IPL 2023, and along with Glenn Maxwell, attacked the leg-spin bowlers, setting a massive target of 213 runs for LSG. LSG lost three wickets in the powerplay, but Marcus Stoinis and later Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran led a counter-attack, bringing the game back to a close finish. The game’s momentum shifted when Harshal Patel took two wickets in the final over, but LSG ultimately won with a quick single after a ‘Mankad-miss’ moment.
