After his heroics in the T20 World Cup the previous year, Chennai Super Kings named MS Dhoni as their skipper in 2008. Dhoni has never let CSK down, leading them to the playoffs in each of the last ten seasons. While the Super Kings stumbled a little in 2020 after failing to qualify for the second round. Dhoni and his teammates were back to their best in the 2021 edition. CSK stood in first place in the points table when the competition was interrupted, having won five of their first seven games.

As a result, Dhoni’s leadership abilities have not deteriorated. But, given that he has turned 40, CSK will need to find a replacement. Dhoni will not be captaining the Super Kings indefinitely, and the team will require a new captain in the future.

Here, we have jotted down 5 players that CSK can target in the coming mega auctions:

1. David Warner

David Warner started his IPL journey through Delhi Capital, the player shone in Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is the leading run-scorer in the history of IPL amongst the foreigners in the cricket series. The player us also known for scoring 50 half-centuries which is the most by any player. David is a left-handed batsman and has been a renowned skipper. It was under his leadership that the sun risers won the series for the very first time in IPL 2016.

Needless to say, the man has a positive influence over Sunrisers Hyderabad as well as is the owner of many hats. If CSK chooses David Warner they will surely profit from his expensive yet knowledgeable expertise and leadership.

2. Shikhar Dhawan

The Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has been opted out of Delhi Capitals as the team chose not to retain the veteran cricketer. With this development, he is now open to playing for other teams as their new skipper in the coming years. The player had previously played for Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Deccan Chargers along with the Delhi Capitals. IPL 2022 and the auction will be his chance to secure his spot in the 5th team. The last three seasons saw Shikhar Dhawan scoring above 500 runs. He had even led team India on a tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year and also the Sunrisers team in 2013 and 2014.

Shikhar’s experience of the past years as a batsman, and captain along with his fitness still being at the peak, Shikhar Dhawan is due for his chance at captaincy. The CSK team might even benefit from his expertise and experience in leading a team.

3. Manish Pandey

Manish Pandey holds a little experience as the captain of an IPL team. However, while captaining Karnataka in the domestic circuit, he has lived up to people’s expectations. In terms of batting, he was the first Indian centurion in the IPL when he represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He also shone for the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he thrived under Gautam Gambhir’s guidance. The 31-year-old has a long list of achievements to his name, and the Super Kings may choose him as their new captain.

Pandey has been playing for the Sunrisers since 2018 and has racked up a lot of runs. However, the right-hander has been chastised for his strike rate. The seasoned batter was also forced to sit out a couple of games before returning to the lineup.

4. K L Rahul

K L Rahul is the IPL’s most consistent player. He is one of the most dangerous batters in the world of cricket at the moment. Since the 2018 season, his batsmanship has been so steady that he has scored more than 500 runs in every season. He is expected to leave the Punjab Kings, according to reports. Though he didn’t have a fantastic time as a captain with the Punjab Kings, a new team with a new squad and coaching staff could enable him to show his true ability. The player is currently the full-time vice-captain of the national T20I team, which will aid in the development of his captaincy abilities. Many teams are anxious to add the consistent opener to their lineup, as seen by his performance.

CSK might as well be in talks of securing the prolific player and honing his skills for a future captain.

5. Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan rose to prominence when India finished second in the U19 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2016. In the same year, he signed a contract with the now-defunct Gujarat Lions. After batting successfully for Suresh Raina’s team, he went to the Mumbai Indians in 2018. Ishan Kishan is known for his bold approaches and fearless practice in the cricket field, leading him to earn many laurels.

CSK, captained by Dhoni, may decide to invest in him for captaincy purposes. The left-hander has captained Jharkhand in the home circuit and has also led India U19. With his fearless brand of cricket, Kishan has the potential to change the outlook of any team.
