IPL 2022: Instances when R Ashwin surprised the cricket fraternity

The experienced Indian off-spinner is famed for his innovation in the field, and during his 50-run innings, Ashwin didn’t shy away from using an unusual approach.

Ravichandran Ashwin has achieved a number of milestones in his T20 career with a ball in hand, but his form in the ongoing IPL is exceptional, as he is having a huge impact around the league. It was time for Ashwin, the batter, to shine during the match against Delhi Capitals. With the off spinner’s shift to Rajasthan Royals, Ashwin has emerged as a top-order batsman, since the Royals have put him at number three. He has already stunned the cricket world by retiring out during 20th match of the season against the Lucknow Super Giants and by dismissing KKR’s star batsman Andre Russell for a golden duck in the 30th match of IPL 2022. Let us have a brief look at these instances that surprised the cricketing world.

Retired Out

R Ashwin has been the first batsman in the IPL to be deliberately retired out against Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday evening. Ashwin stepped off after two balls of the 19th over when the squad’s score was 135 for 4, despite scoring 28 runs off 23 balls.

After RR were reduced to 67 for 4 in the tenth over, Ashwin was put in at No 6.

The strategy was for Ashwin and Shimron Hetmyer to hit the ball around for some few overs during the innings because there were still a few remaining, and then Parag to come in and hit a couple bigger ones. There was no mention of anyone being retired out.

In the 16th over, it was Ashwin who initiated the RR counterattack by driving the ball and pulling off-spinner K Gowtham for successive sixes. However, they were the only limits he could reach. Ashwin took a single out to the cleaners in Avesh Khan’s 19th over and began walking back.

Andre Russell wicket

Despite Ashwin’s remarkable economy, which helped Sanju Samson’s RR hold rival batsmen at distance, the elite Indian spinner’s lack of wickets was becoming a cause of worry.

Against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 30th match of ongoing season, though, the RR spinner proved his ability by striking the dangerous Andre Russell for a golden duck. Ashwin bowled one of the best deliveries of the season, trying to trick the great KKR all-rounder and removing his stumps. Russell was unable to read the seasoned spinner’s carrom ball, which he produced.

Opening at No.3

On Wednesday, May 11 at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai, Ashwin made headlines for striking a peculiar approach during a match against the Delhi Capitals. After electing to bat first, the Royals lost early wickets, including Jos Buttler, the 2022 Indian Premier League’s Orange Cap holder with three hundreds.

Ashwin came in at number three and, in order to maximise the powerplay, quickly dispatched medium-pacer Shardul Thakur for a handful of fours before striking spin bowler Axar Patel for a four and a six.

After 276 T20 matches, including 178 in the IPL, seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin finally got his maiden half-century in the shortest version of the game on Wednesday at the DY Patil Stadium, batting at number 3 for Rajasthan Royals against his former team Delhi Capitals. He has reached this milestone after 14 seasons in the IPL and 15 years since having his T20 debut in 2007.
