Sri Lanka management has decided to appoint Mahela Jayawardene as the national team’s consultant for T20 World Cup.

Jayawardene has had a stupendous career with the bat, and the world admired that. However, the Sri Lankan didn’t stop to amuse us with his mentoring and coaching skills. He was appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians in the year 2017 and has managed to lift three out of the four trophies on offer. He also won the inaugural season of The Hundred with Southern Braves. His experience will be an enormous boost to the young Sri Lankan side, as they start their campaign against Namibia in Abu Dhabi on the 18th of October. They are placed in Group A where they will be facing other teams such as Ireland and Netherlands only the first two teams shall qualify from this group for the super 12 round.

The Sri Lankan side won the World Cup in 2014 where they beat India comfortably in the final. However, they failed to make it beyond the group stage in the 2016 edition. Keeping in mind their recent form and the controversies regarding the senior players, the Sri Lankan side will require to change their game immensely if they are to make progress past the group stage in this Tournament. Mahela Jayawardene according to Ashley De Silva, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket, is the man who can harness the potential of this new and young side.

Addressing Jayawardene’s addition De Silva  said, ‘we are happy to have Mahela into his new roles, as his presence with the Sri Lanka Team… is going to help the players immensely.’
