Australian cricket veteran David Warner confirmed his retirement from international cricket after the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup in June. Warner made the announcement following Australia’s 11-run victory against West Indies in the first T20I match of the series at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
The 37-year-old, who has already retired from ODI and Test cricket, expressed his decision after making his 100th appearance for Australia in T20I cricket. He became the third cricketer in history to play 100-plus matches in each of the international formats.
Warner played a pivotal role in Australia’s victory against West Indies, scoring a blistering 70 runs off just 36 balls. His stellar performance, coupled with Adam Zampa’s three-wicket haul, secured the win for Australia despite a strong fightback from the Windies.
In his post-game remarks, Warner stated, “I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there. It’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months.” If Australia manages to reclaim the T20 World Cup trophy, Warner will retire from cricket as a world champion across formats, having previously won the World Test Championship title in June and the 2023 ODI World Cup title in November.
Australia is slated to begin their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign on June 6 against Oman. They are placed in Group B alongside England, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland.
