Afghanistan Stuns England to Script History in Cricket World Cup 2023

The Afghanistan cricket team stunned the England cricket team by defending a total of 285 runs after batting first. Afghanistan secured their second win in World Cup history, scripting a historic victory over England. England struggled from the very first ball against Afghanistan’s determination. Afghanistan first entered the World Cup in 2015 in Australia and won their first match against Scotland before causing one of the biggest upsets against the England team. Afghanistan had remained winless in the CWC23 tournament until now, but they secured their first win against England.

When batting first, Afghanistan set a formidable total of 245 runs, thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 80 off 57 balls and Ikram Alikhil’s 58 off 66 deliveries. Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s impressive spell yielded 3 wickets while conceding 40 runs. Mujeeb removed Harry Brook, who appeared to be in good form and could have turned the match in England’s favor.

England has now lost two matches in the CWC23, with the defeat to Afghanistan following their loss to New Zealand in the World Cup opener. Apart from Harry Brook’s 66, no England batter scored more than 50 runs. Previously, the underdog Ireland had upset England in the 2011 World Cup in India. This marks the second time that an underdog team has outperformed England in a World Cup. Afghanistan won the match by 69 runs.
