India Open: Lakshya Sen stuns world champion Loh Kean Yew to win the men’s singles title

Earlier in the semifinal of the tournament, the 20-year-old had defeated Malaysian opponent Ng Tze Yong to reach his first Super 500 maiden final.

20 years old Lakshya Sen of Almora, Uttarakhand thwarted reigning world champion, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in straight games and bagged the men’s singles title at Yonex-Sunrise India Open.

The player, who belongs to a badminton family where his father D.K Sen is a coach and his brother is also into professional badminton at international levels had defeated Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia in the men’s category to reach his first Super 500 final of his career while two-times Olympic champion PV Sindhu suffered a loss at the tournament’s semifinal respectively.

Lakshya had achieved World No. One position by BWF World Junior rankings at the junior singles in the year of 2017. He has grabbed a silver medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics boy’s singles tournament as well as powered his team “Alpha” to bag a gold medal in the mixed category.

Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles category at India Open, pair of Satwik SaiRaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the title at the KD Jadhav stadium defeating the pair of Indonesia Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in straight sets of 21-16, 26-24. The duo fought 43 minutes at the final to confirm the final trophy.

Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrunghphan bagged the Women’s Singles title while the pairing of Thailand Fourth-seeded Benyapa and Nuntakarn Aimsaard won the women’s doubles title at the BWF India Open on Sunday in New Delhi within 35 minutes.
