Puducherry to reopen schools and colleges from July 16

Puducherry aims at vaccinating its entire population before the country’s independence day.

On July 11, Puducherry’s Chief Minister N Rangaswamy announced that schools for students in Classes 9 to 12 and colleges are set to reopen from 16th July as the number of COVID-19 cases have dropped significantly.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan added that over 5 lakh individuals had been inoculated in the Union Territory (UT) while conveying its goal of vaccinating the entire UT before India’s independence day i.e. August 15. The Lt. Governor also talked about the vaccine hesitancy that citizens and that they have now successfully overcome.

During the inauguration of a mass vaccination programme of COVID-19 at Veerampattinam, Soundararajan had appealed to the UT’s CM about a “healthy environment”, which should be created for the functioning of the Cabinet as soon as possible.

According to S Mohan Kumar, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services informed that in the last 24 hours, Puducherry had registered 145 fresh cases of coronavirus with zero fatality. The test positivity rate stood at 2.49 per cent.

For the very first time in over six months, the UT recorded no COVID-19 related death in a single day with 213 patients recovering. The rates of fatality and recovery were reported to be 1.49 per cent and 97.25 per cent respectively.

As of 10th July, a total of 1,769 people had succumbed to the virus and 1,15,702 patients had recovered.
