We’ve heard tales about the naughty sequence of activities that occurred at the renowned Atlanta block party for years. Freaknik. However, audiences will have the chance to relive it again due to Hulu’s upcoming original documentary series, “Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told”.
Although Hulu has not yet announced a release date for the documentary, we may assume that it will make its Hulu premiere sometime in 2023, which is Freaknik’s 40th anniversary and hip-hop’s 50th.
Shortly after the miniseries’ initial social media announcement, uproar developed. Freaknik was described as a hedonistic hip-hop hoedown of the South as the event gained prominence. But that wasn’t what Freaknik was about, according to SoSo Def founder and record producer Jermaine Dupri.
In an interview with Tamron Hall, Jermaine, who co-executive produced the production alongside Uncle Luke, clarified the documentary’s controversies. He quoted, “I want to say this to all of those people out there. My vision of Freaknik is really a story about the South and Atlanta. It’s not really a story about what everybody keeps talking about,” he told the host.
“I don’t like that part because I feel like it’s a little disrespectful because I’m just telling a story of Atlanta, right? And how Atlanta was built into the place that it is today.” He informed the audience that Atlanta is depicted in The Wildest Party Never Told as the “multi-cultural, multi-city” location as it is. “Freaknik plays one of the biggest roles in that period,” he continued.
However, this documentary isn’t exactly suited for young audiences. “I can’t guarantee that the movie won’t have any freaking. Freaknik is the name of it. “It is what it is,” jokingly said Jermaine.
