JSW Energy’s subsidiary secures 500 MW battery energy storage project but faces regulatory hurdle

JSW Renew Energy Five Limited, a subsidiary of JSW Energy, has been awarded a significant 500 MW/1000 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). However, the project faces a regulatory challenge following a recent decision by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

CERC, in its order dated January 2, 2025, declined to adopt the proposed tariff for the project, citing misalignment with prevailing market prices. The issue stems from delays by SECI in signing critical agreements: the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement and the Battery Energy Storage Sale Agreement.

JSW Energy has announced plans to appeal this decision, emphasizing its commitment to advancing sustainable energy projects despite the regulatory setback.
