Hanoi’s OCOP program transforms local Agriculture

In Tráng Việt Commune, Mê Linh District, local farmers experienced uncertainty regarding their harvests due to fluctuating market conditions. However, the OCOP program has transformed their outlook. After achieving three- to four-star certifications, farmers now enjoy greater stability and confidence in their production. Đàm Văn Đua, director of Đông Cao Cooperative, reported that their cooperative cultivates 200 hectares, yielding 60,000 tonnes of vegetables annually. Since joining OCOP, 17 of their 18 evaluated products received three-star ratings, while one achieved a coveted four-star status. This recognition has not only stabilized their market access but also increased product value, allowing the cooperative to collaborate with a South Korean company for export-ready processing.

Hà Nội’s One Commune, One Product (OCOP) program has made significant strides in addressing the challenges faced by local agricultural producers. The initiative aims to enhance product output and sustainability, helping farmers navigate the complexities of market access.

Similarly, Văn Đức Agricultural Cooperative benefitted from a four-star OCOP certification for their cabbages, empowering hundreds of households to produce VietGAP vegetables for local markets and export. In Đông Anh District, Tiên Dương Organic Agricultural Cooperative has also thrived, focusing on organic vegetables and medicinal herbs. Director Phạm Thị Lý highlighted their commitment to safe production practices, which have resulted in strong consumer feedback and successful sales through collective kitchens and clean food stores.

Hà Nội currently boasts over 2,700 OCOP-certified products, characterized by diverse packaging and adherence to quality standards. The demand for agricultural products remains high among the city’s nearly 12 million residents, providing ample opportunity for local producers. To support this growth, the Hà Nội Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is planning specialized farming areas and implementing policies to promote large-scale production.

The OCOP program has catalyzed a revitalization of Hà Nội’s agricultural sector, encouraging farmers to innovate and align their practices with consumer demands. Nguyễn Văn Chí, Deputy Head of the Hà Nội New Rural Development Coordination Office, noted that the program has unlocked the region’s agricultural potential, leading to significant shifts in rural economic development and improving the overall quality of life for local communities.

As the city enhances promotional efforts and provides resources for stakeholders, the future of Hà Nội’s OCOP products looks promising, with a strong emphasis on sustainable growth and market expansion.
