Regime leader Min Aung Hlaing has accused unnamed foreign governments of backing anti-military coup resistance groups, including the People’s Defense Force (PDF) and Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs), to sustain armed conflicts and shape Myanmar’s future. His allegations were made during a speech in Naypyidaw on Monday.

The accusations come amidst significant military losses for the regime. The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) captured the Northeastern Regional Military Command (RMC) headquarters in Lashio, Shan State, on August 3. Despite this setback, the regime has not officially acknowledged the loss, which leaves them in control of 13 out of 14 RMCs nationwide. The Western RMC in Ann Township, Arakan State, is also under threat from the Arakan Army (AA).

Min Aung Hlaing suggested that foreign countries are providing various forms of support, including money, food, medicines, arms, ammunition, technology, and logistical opportunities, to the armed insurgents. He did not specify which countries were allegedly involved.

In his speech, Min Aung Hlaing also mentioned that EAOs are reportedly operating weapons factories along the Burma-China border with equipment sourced from abroad. Additionally, he noted that weapons are being smuggled into southeastern Myanmar from Thailand. These claims highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of the conflict, with international dimensions complicating the internal struggle.

Adding to the regime’s challenges, spokesperson Zaw Min Tun confirmed that three senior military officers surrendered to the MNDAA on Sunday, further indicating cracks within the military’s ranks.

As the conflict in Myanmar continues, the involvement of foreign governments, whether perceived or real, adds another layer of complexity to an already tumultuous situation. The international community’s role, along with internal strife, underscores the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
