The floods ravaging Myanmar since early July have affected over 130,000 people from more than 33,000 households, according to a disaster management official. These floods, which have caused significant damage across various regions and states, are expected to continue with more heavy rains predicted.
Impact and Areas Affected
The worst-hit area is the Magway region, where over 53,000 people have been affected by the rising waters. Floodwaters have also submerged areas in Myitkyina, located in Myanmar’s northern Kachin State, trapping thousands in their homes and disrupting electricity and phone lines. The state weather office has warned that more heavy rain is expected, exacerbating the already dire situation.
Damage and Destruction
More than 110 houses have been either damaged or destroyed by the floods, with over 90 completely demolished. One death has been reported in the Sagaing region due to the flooding. The severe weather conditions have not only displaced thousands of residents but also disrupted their daily lives and access to essential services.
Government Response
In response to the disaster, the Myanmar government has mobilized resources to aid those affected by the floods. Relief supplies, including rice, canned fish, and cash, totaling over 390 million kyats (approximately US$120,000), have been distributed to the flood-affected people.
