Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in the historic move, will preside over the first cabinet meeting in Nusantara, the new capital city, from August 11 to 13. This pivotal gathering will focus on the transition to the incoming administration of President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, set to take office in October.
The meeting aims to evaluate the achievements of Jokowi’s administration over the past year and to plan the transition to the new government. All ministers from the Onward Indonesia Cabinet have been summoned to this critical meeting, which is expected to shape the final months of Jokowi’s presidency and ensure a seamless handover to his successor.
The cabinet meeting will be held at the newly constructed Garuda Palace and the State Palace in Nusantara, located in East Kalimantan. Acting Head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono, and the Public Works and Public Housing Minister confirmed that infrastructure, including electricity, water supply, and internet connectivity, has been meticulously prepared to support the event. The accommodations for the ministers have been arranged at Hotel Nusantara, ensuring that the logistical needs of the attendees are fully met.
During the visit, President Jokowi will also oversee the groundbreaking of five significant projects in Nusantara. These include new offices for Bank BCA, Indogrosir, and Swiss-Belhotel, underscoring the commitment to developing Nusantara as a functional and vibrant administrative hub. This development is a crucial step in showcasing Nusantara’s readiness to host major governmental functions and its potential as Indonesia’s future administrative center.
This cabinet meeting is not just a procedural necessity but a strategic move to demonstrate the progress made in Nusantara and solidify future capital plans. Jokowi aims to highlight the city’s development and its importance in Indonesia’s long-term strategic vision by holding the meeting in Nusantara. The new capital project, which aims to alleviate congestion in Jakarta and promote more balanced economic development across the archipelago, is one of Jokowi’s key initiatives.
The focus on a smooth transition is particularly critical given the challenges faced by the current administration, including economic recovery post-pandemic and ongoing infrastructure projects. The meeting will provide an opportunity for Jokowi and his ministers to review these projects and ensure that the incoming administration can continue them without disruption.
