Indonesian President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, made a strong appeal for greater unity among Global South nations during a high-profile address to African leaders, emphasizing the need for solidarity in facing global challenges. Speaking at the opening of the Indonesia-Africa Forum in Jakarta, Jokowi underscored the importance of collaboration among developing countries to amplify their voices on the international stage.
Jokowi in his address highlighted the shared struggles of countries in the Global South, including economic inequality, climate change, and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged African nations to work closely with Indonesia and other developing countries to push for a more equitable global order, where the interests of the Global South are better represented.
“We, the nations of the Global South, must stand together to address the challenges that disproportionately affect us,” Jokowi said in an address. “Our unity is our strength. By working together, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that our interests are safeguarded in the global arena.”
The Indonesia-Africa Forum, which brings together government leaders, business executives, and civil society representatives from across Africa, aims to strengthen economic and political ties between Indonesia and African countries. The forum has become a key platform for discussing shared concerns and exploring opportunities for cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and technology transfer.
Jokowi’s call for unity resonated with many African leaders in attendance, who echoed the need for stronger cooperation. Several African heads of state praised Indonesia’s efforts to build bridges with Africa and expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral and multilateral partnerships.
“Indonesia’s leadership in fostering South-South cooperation is commendable,” said Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa in an address. “We are eager to deepen our relationship with Indonesia and other Global South nations to address the common challenges we face.”
The forum also served as a venue for discussing specific initiatives aimed at boosting trade and investment between Indonesia and Africa. Jokowi emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to supporting African development through increased investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He announced several new initiatives, including a special fund to finance infrastructure projects in Africa and expanded scholarship programs for African students to study in Indonesia.
