Indonesia and Australia in a move set to redefine regional security dynamics, signed a landmark Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) on August 29, 2024, further solidifying their strategic partnership. The pact was signed in Jakarta by Indonesia’s President-elect and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles.
This historic agreement deemed the most significant defence collaboration between the two nations to date, underscores their shared commitment to enhancing regional stability and upholding a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific. The DCA is designed to deepen military ties through expanded joint exercises, increased interoperability between the Australian Defense Force and the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and enhanced cooperation in key areas such as maritime security, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian assistance.
One of the pivotal aspects of the agreement is the provision for reciprocal access, allowing the defence forces of both countries to operate in each other’s territories for mutually agreed activities. This includes a range of operations from joint military exercises to technical cooperation in science and technology. The agreement also outlines the exchange of military personnel for education and training purposes, further fostering closer ties between the two armed forces.
The DCA also introduces enhanced legal protections for military personnel engaged in these joint activities, a move that reflects the deepening trust and strategic alignment between Indonesia and Australia. Both nations have emphasized the importance of maintaining their independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, with the agreement serving as a testament to their mutual respect and shared strategic interests.
Richard Marles, speaking at the signing ceremony, described the agreement as a historic milestone in the Australia-Indonesia relationship, highlighting its significance for the broader security and prosperity of the region. He praised Prabowo Subianto for his leadership and commitment to strengthening the defence partnership, noting that the DCA represents a new era of collaboration between the two countries.
