Manipur Riot Victims Being Trained At China-Funded PDF Camps

The fragile situation in Manipur provides an opportunity for China to exert influence and potentially support rival rebel forces, thereby sowing internal discord in India. This could pose a significant challenge to India’s internal stability and security.

Victims of the Manipur riots are allegedly receiving training at camps in Myanmar funded by China, which support the People’s Defence Forces (PDF). Myanmar, where a China-backed military junta is in power, already poses a significant threat to India due to its internal instability. The involvement of China-funded PDF in training victims from Manipur further exacerbates the existing instability in India’s Northeastern region.

Myanmar is currently under the rule of an unstable government led by a military junta backed by China. This junta seized power through a coup d’รฉtat, claiming that the democratically elected government had engaged in unethical voting practices. The People’s Defence Forces (PDF) emerged in the wake of the coup in Myanmar in February 2021.

The state of Manipur is currently experiencing riots stemming from ethnic clashes between the Meitei population residing in the plains and the Kuki community living in the mountains, many of whom are migrants from Myanmar. The fragile situation in Manipur provides an opportunity for China to exert influence and potentially support rival rebel forces, thereby sowing internal discord in India. This could pose a significant challenge to India’s internal stability and security.

Efforts to address internal instability in the region are currently underway, but they have proven insufficient in countering China‘s indirect involvement in India’s internal affairs. The porous and vulnerable borders between Northeastern states and Myanmar play a significant role in facilitating illegal migration, weapons smuggling, drug trafficking, and insurgencies, often financially backed by rival nations like China.

To address these longstanding challenges, it is imperative to enhance the protection of our borders through the deployment of advanced surveillance technology and by providing robust support to our armed forces responsible for safeguarding these vulnerable frontiers.
