Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in high-level talks with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders, reflecting India’s nuanced approach to the ongoing conflict between the two nations.
In response to inquiries about PM Modi’s recent visits, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar addressed the media in Tokyo, underscoring the strategic nature of these engagements. Dr. Jaishankar stated, “I can reasonably expect that there will be more contact between us and Ukraine and between us and Russia as well. Like any government, we make our positions known at the right time, through the right channel. There is really not more I can say.”
Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic efforts began with a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the G7 summit in Italy earlier this year. This interaction, held on the summit’s sidelines, emphasized India’s support for dialogue and humanitarian considerations amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Following this, PM Modi visited Moscow a few weeks later for a comprehensive discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Moscow visit focused on reinforcing the long-standing bilateral relationship between India and Russia, addressing strategic, economic, and defense cooperation areas.
Dr. Jaishankar also highlighted ongoing diplomatic channels, noting, “I am also in touch with my counterparts,” indicating India’s active role in maintaining open dialogue with both parties involved in the conflict.
India’s approach in 2024 demonstrates a commitment to balancing its historical ties with Russia while simultaneously engaging with Ukraine to support peace and stability.
