At the National Day celebrations of Egypt, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the deepening relationship between India and Egypt, reflecting on a longstanding partnership that has evolved significantly in recent years. In his address, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the historical and modern dimensions of the bilateral relationship.
Historically, India and Egypt have shared strong diplomatic ties dating back to the early 20th century. In 1947, India was one of the first countries to recognize Egypt’s independence after the end of British rule.
The countries established formal diplomatic relations in 1948, and since then, their ties have been marked by cooperation in various spheres, including trade, culture, and politics. In recent years, the relationship has strengthened with a focus on economic cooperation. Dr. Jaishankar highlighted that “our economic cooperation has been steadily diversified with both sides seeking new opportunities for mutual benefit.”
He pointed out that over 50 Indian companies have invested in diverse sectors of the Egyptian economy, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, and green energy, underscoring the expanding commercial links between the two nations.
Dr. Jaishankar also noted the growth of India’s IT industry in Egypt, where companies have established partnerships aimed at mutual technological advancements.
The Defence sector has also seen enhanced cooperation. Since 2021, the Indian and Egyptian Air Forces have conducted regular joint exercises, both bilaterally and within larger regional frameworks. “Our defence collaboration has also grown in this period, since 2021, our Air Forces have held regular exercises—bilaterally as well as in a larger format,” Dr. Jaishankar stated, reflecting on the strategic military partnership that has emerged.
