Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused Ukraine of recruiting terrorists from Syria to bolster its fight against Russia. According to Lavrov, Ukrainian intelligence is actively engaging with militant groups in the Middle East, particularly in Syria, to bring foreign fighters into the ongoing conflict.
These claims highlight concerns about Ukraine’s purported collaboration with radical groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a militant organisation operating in the Idlib region. This recruitment effort is seen as a response to Ukraine’s manpower shortages amidst its long-standing conflict with Russian forces.
Reports suggest that Ukrainian representatives have recently met with leaders of these terrorist factions in Idlib, hoping to deploy them for covert operations targeting Russian troops. This recruitment has raised alarms in Moscow, which has called on the international community, particularly the United States, to intervene and prevent further escalation. Lavrov condemned these efforts, accusing the Ukrainian government of aligning with terrorist elements and undermining global security.
Furthermore, the issue has gained international attention, with some African countries, such as Mali and Niger, condemning Ukraine’s alleged support of terrorism. These nations have urged the United Nations to recognise the Ukrainian government’s actions as supporting terrorism, a move that could have broader diplomatic implications for Kyiv.
Lavrov’s allegations come as part of a broader narrative from Moscow, which has long criticised Ukraine for working with extremist factions during the conflict.
