Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested in France over alleged criminal activities on platform

The warrant, issued as part of a preliminary investigation, accuses Durov of failing to moderate content on Telegram, which has allegedly been used for money laundering, drug trafficking, and the distribution of pedophilic material.

Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, was detained by French authorities at Le Bourget Airport near Paris on Saturday evening after arriving from Azerbaijan. According to CNN, Durov, 39, was taken into custody by officers from France’s anti-fraud office, attached to French customs, due to an arrest warrant issued by France’s OFMIN, an office responsible for preventing violence against minors.

The warrant, issued as part of a preliminary investigation, accuses Durov of failing to moderate content on Telegram, which has allegedly been used for money laundering, drug trafficking, and the distribution of pedophilic material. Sources close to the case, as reported by AFP, revealed that Durov, a Franco-Russian billionaire, had avoided traveling to France and Europe since the issuance of the arrest warrant. However, his recent arrival in Paris surprised investigators, who were aware of his wanted status.

BFMTV, a CNN affiliate, reported that Durov is expected to appear in court on Sunday, August 25, 2024, to face charges related to these allegations. The investigation highlights concerns over Telegram’s role in facilitating criminal activities due to its encrypted messaging services, which critics argue allow illegal activities to go unchecked.

While details of the case remain confidential, an investigator involved in the case was quoted saying that the time for Telegram’s impunity has ended, underscoring the seriousness of the charges against Durov. The arrest signals a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny of digital platforms and their responsibilities in preventing the spread of illegal content.

Durov’s legal team has not yet commented on the arrest, and it remains unclear how the case will proceed. However, the outcome of the court appearance could have major implications for Telegram and its global operations.
