Russian territorial gains in July comparable to Washington D.C.

Russian forces captured nearly 200 square kilometers in eastern Ukraine in July, an area comparable to Washington D.C. Despite significant advances this year, major breakthroughs remain elusive amid mounting battlefield losses.

Russian forces have solidified their control over eastern Ukraine, capturing nearly 200 square kilometres (77 square miles) of territory in July, an area roughly equivalent to the size of Washington D.C., according to an AFP analysis published on Wednesday. This report, based on data from the Institute for the Study of War, highlights the ongoing conflict and the significant, albeit slower, territorial expansion by Russian troops.

The recent gains in July mark an increase from the previous month but represent a slowdown compared to the aggressive campaign in May. During that period, Russian forces launched a surprise ground offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region, capturing 449 square kilometers (173 square miles) of territory. This offensive, averaging a daily gain of 14.5 square kilometers (5.6 square miles), marked the largest monthly advance since President Vladimir Putin initiated the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Since the beginning of 2024, Moscow has seized a total of 1,246 square kilometers (481 square miles) of Ukrainian land. This figure far exceeds the 584 square kilometers (225 square miles) captured throughout the entirety of 2023. Despite these advances, Russian forces have struggled to achieve a major breakthrough, facing substantial battlefield losses and a dwindling pool of willing combatants.

In response to the recent developments, Ukrainian forces have fortified their defenses, particularly in key strategic areas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated his call for increased military support from Western allies to counter the Russian offensive and reclaim lost territories. The ongoing conflict has led to significant destruction and a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of civilians displaced from their homes.

The global community is keeping a close watch on the situation. The United States and European Union have imposed stringent sanctions on Russia, aiming to cripple its economy and diminish its ability to sustain military operations. However, these measures have so far done little to deter Russia’s territorial ambitions.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire or a peaceful resolution have stalled. The United Nations has called for renewed talks between the conflicting parties, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and prevent further escalation. Despite these calls, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, with little indication of a forthcoming resolution.

As the conflict drags on, the toll on both military personnel and civilians continues to mount. The international community remains divided on the most effective approach to ending the hostilities, balancing the need for a strong response against Russia with the desire to avoid further escalation that could lead to a broader regional or global conflict.
