Russian President Vladimir Putin has authorised a significant increase in the size of the country’s Armed Forces, citing growing security concerns and a perceived hostile stance from the West. The decision, announced on Monday, raises the total number of personnel to 2,389,130, with 1,500,000 designated as servicemen, up from the previous total of 2,209,130 and 1,320,000 servicemen.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed journalists, attributing this military expansion to numerous threats along Russia’s borders and the tense situation with Western nations. Peskov highlighted that the increasing instability on Russia’s eastern borders and the “extremely hostile” conditions on the western front have necessitated this strategic adjustment.
The revised decree supersedes an earlier order, which is now deemed invalid. This escalation reflects Russia’s response to perceived external pressures and security challenges. The Kremlin’s move underscores a heightened focus on bolstering national defence amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
This military expansion aligns with broader Russian efforts to fortify its defensive capabilities and adapt to evolving security dynamics. The Kremlin’s announcement signals a strategic shift aimed at addressing both immediate threats and long-term security objectives.
As global scrutiny intensifies, the international community will be watching closely to understand the implications of Russia’s increased military readiness and its potential impact on regional stability.
