In a bid to enhance the protection of civilians amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, a U.S. security envoy engaged in discussions with Israeli officials on Thursday, 14th December. The talks centred on strategies to minimize civilian casualties as the conflict continued to escalate, leaving a humanitarian crisis in its wake.
President Joe Biden, echoing concerns for the safety of lives in the Palestinian territory, appealed for measures to safeguard civilians. The conflict, which has endured for over two months, witnessed Israel launching intense attacks along the entire 25-mile (40-kilometre) length of Gaza. Tragically, families found themselves caught in the crossfire as the conflict showed no signs of abating, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
During a meeting with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan discussed the imperative of transitioning from high-intensity military operations to a more precise and targeted phase. Gallant expressed determination, stating that the conflict would endure for more than several months, but he affirmed their commitment to victory and the destruction of the opposition.
Sullivan, in an interview with Israeli TV, highlighted the need for Israel to shift its military approach. He emphasized the importance of moving towards operations that are “more precise, more targeted” to address the evolving dynamics of the conflict. While Sullivan did not provide a specific timeline for this transition, he acknowledged that Israel was expected to continue its military campaign for an extended period.
The U.S. envoy also underscored the necessity of connecting the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip under a “revamped and revitalized” Palestinian Authority government. This suggests a broader diplomatic approach aimed at addressing the root causes of the conflict and fostering a more stable and inclusive governance structure.
Looking ahead, Sullivan is scheduled to delve into discussions on revamping the Palestinian Authority during his visit to Ramallah. Additionally, he plans to address concerns related to “extremist” Jewish settlers and their accountability for violence against Palestinians. These diplomatic efforts indicate a multifaceted approach by the U.S. to navigate the complexities of the conflict and promote a sustainable resolution.
