The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency has issued a second incident alert hours after a previous explosion was reported by a vessel southwest of Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah. The latest incident occurred approximately 97 nautical miles, or nearly 180 kilometers, northwest of Hodeidah, according to the UKMTO. The agency did not provide further specifics about the incident.
The first explosion, reported by the vessel’s master, happened around 63 nautical miles (about 116 kilometers) southwest of Hodeidah. Fortunately, the crew and the unnamed vessel were not harmed in the explosion, and the ship continued its voyage to the next port as planned, the UKMTO confirmed.
The region has witnessed escalating tensions in recent months, with Houthi fighters in Yemen intensifying their drone and missile attacks on maritime targets in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Houthis have linked these attacks to Israel and its ports, though there has been no confirmation of any direct connection.
The UKMTO’s alerts underscore the growing concerns about maritime security in this volatile region, where geopolitical and military tensions continue to impact international shipping routes. The agency’s warnings are crucial for navigating safely through these hazardous waters, as the situation remains fluid and further developments are anticipated.
This series of incidents highlights the increased risks for maritime operations near Yemen, emphasizing the need for vigilance and caution. The maritime community is advised to stay updated with the latest alerts from the UKMTO and other relevant agencies to ensure safe navigation through affected areas.
