Israeli attack helicopters carried out a series of airstrikes in West Rafah early this morning, marking a major escalation in the conflict between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants. The strikes caused casualties and widespread destruction, adding to the humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip.
Airstrikes targeted several locations in West Rafah, including residential areas and alleged militant positions. Palestinian medical sources reported many casualties, including civilians, and extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. The rescue service rushed to the site to evacuate the injured and assess the extent of the damage.
“The airstrikes came without warning. We heard explosions and saw smoke rising from various parts of the neighbourhood,” said a resident of West Rafah.
Israeli military officials defended the airstrikes, saying they were in response to continued rocket attacks fired from Gaza into southern Israel. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is targeting Hamas and Islamic Jihad military infrastructure to protect Israeli civilians.
Located in the southern Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border, Rafah has been a frequent target of Israeli military operations due to its proximity to Israel and alleged military activity. The area has seen sporadic clashes and airstrikes amid heightened tensions between Palestinian groups and Israeli security forces.
The latest escalation follows a suspended ceasefire and a deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by years of blockade and regular military attacks.
“This relentless bombardment is unacceptable and must end immediately,” said senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad. Israel’s actions are a clear violation of international law and the rights of Palestinian civilians.
International responses were swift and called for restraint and a return to negotiation. “We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint and prioritize the protection of civilians,” said a UN spokesman.
