Israel Defense Forces (IDF) helicopter crashed in Rafah overnight, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to seven others. The crash, which occurred after midnight, involved Warrant Officer (res.) Daniel Alloush, 37, from Tel Aviv, and Warrant Officer (res.) Tom Ish-Shalom, 38, from Ness Harim, both members of Unit 669.
The helicopter was on a mission to rescue a wounded soldier when the accident happened. The victims included a female pilot, a male pilot, a mechanic from Squadron 123, a doctor, and a reserve combat soldier, all of whom sustained serious injuries. Additionally, a combat doctor and a reserve mechanic from Squadron 123 were moderately injured.
The IDF has confirmed that no enemy forces were involved in the incident and has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The helicopter went down while in close proximity to the ground.
By 2:00 a.m., all injured personnel were transported to Soroka Medical Center for treatment. The IDF noted that this incident is exceptional, as it has conducted hundreds of successful rescue missions in Gaza, rescuing approximately 1,700 soldiers without major incident prior to this accident.
National Unity leader MK Benny Gantz extended his condolences to the families of the victims via social media. The IDF’s ongoing probe aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The IDF’s investigation into the crash is expected to take some time, as it will involve a detailed review of the helicopter’s flight data and operational conditions at the time of the accident. This crash underscores the high-risk nature of military operations in conflict zones. The IDF has faced increased scrutiny following recent market and geopolitical developments, which may impact public perception and the operational environment for such missions.
