Lebanon’s Hezbollah has targeted military bases approximately 20km (12.4 miles) into Israel in a drone attack that also wounded civilians, some “seriously,” said Al Jazeera. Meanwhile, an intense Israeli raid of the occupied West Bank’s Jenin is ongoing, with at least four Palestinians killed so far, according to the Health Ministry, including by an army drone strike. A previous Israeli raid in the city of Tubas resulted in four fatalities.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that at least 40 people were killed and 71 injured in Israeli attacks over the past 24 hours. The UN’s Human Rights chief, Volker Turk, and the EU’s foreign policy head, Josep Borrell, have urged immediate de-escalation in the Middle East due to concerns that the Gaza conflict could intensify. “We are deeply concerned about the potential for further escalation,” Turk told Al Jazeera.
At least 39,653 people have been killed and 91,535 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. Approximately 1,139 individuals were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, with over 200 people being taken captive. Hezbollah’s latest attack on Israel, near the city of Acre, demonstrates the group’s ability to penetrate deeper into the country, some 20 km (12.4 miles) from the southern border. It also indicates that Hezbollah has detailed knowledge of Israeli military installations and can strike them, bypassing layers of Israeli defenses.
Israel has also carried out strikes in southern Lebanon today. The Israeli military hit a building in the town of Mayfadoun, resulting in the deaths of five Hezbollah fighters, according to Al Jazeera. Additionally, an attack on Odaisseh killed one person, while another in the village of Khiam injured one person. Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, will address the public later today.
