Lammy announced the meeting and its results on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the urgency of the situation. He mentioned that they had discussed actions for a ceasefire in Gaza to end the suffering heal and support the hostages, and to work to reduce tensions in the area. There were calls for a ceasefire as violence escalated in Gaza and the death toll continued to rise.
The role of mediators between the UK and Jordan is to resolve some important issues. First, it is believed that an end to the killings is necessary to stop the bloodshed that has caused thousands of deaths. Gaza’s health department said at least 39,090 people have been killed and 90,147 injured since the conflict began. We need to stop the violence immediately so that the human death does not stop.
Second, the candidates emphasized the importance of promoting humanitarian aid. Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis due to a lack of medical supplies, food and clean water. Humanitarian organizations face serious challenges, including attacks, as shown recently when the UN team was attacked despite recognition and cooperation with the Israeli authorities.
And the issue of custody remains important. Many people are said to be still in captivity in the Gaza Strip after Israel’s attack by Hamas on October 7, which killed around 1,139. Ensuring the safe release of detainees is a key issue in the ceasefire talks.
Lammy’s meeting with Safadi touched on the regional implications of the conflict in Gaza. As tensions rise in the Middle East, fears of further escalation grow. The councillors emphasized the need for stability and prevention of regional conflicts.
