VOC Port sees substantial cargo volume surge in August 2024

The port’s success in August also reflects broader trends in the global shipping industry, with increased demand for maritime transport as global trade continues to recover.

Tuticorin’s VOC Port has reported robust growth in cargo volumes for August 2024, marking a significant milestone in its operational performance. The port, which serves as a crucial gateway for trade in South India, recorded a remarkable increase in both container and bulk cargo throughput, underlining its strategic importance in the region’s logistics network.

According to the official figures released by the VOC Port Authority, the port handled a total of 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo in August, reflecting a 15% year-on-year growth compared to the same period in 2023. The container segment showed particularly strong performance, with a 12% increase in Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) handled, reaching 90,000 TEUs for the month. This surge in volume was driven by a combination of higher exports of manufactured goods and increased imports of raw materials.

The port’s leadership attributed this growth to several strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and attracting new business. Recent investments in port infrastructure, including the expansion of container terminals and the modernization of handling equipment, have played a critical role in boosting the port’s capacity. Additionally, the implementation of digital technologies for cargo tracking and management has improved turnaround times, further enhancing the port’s competitiveness.

VOC Port has benefited from its strategic location and its role as a key hub for transhipment in the Indian Ocean region, making it an attractive choice for international shipping lines.

The VOC Port Authority has outlined plans to further enhance its capacity and service offerings. The construction of a new container terminal and the harbour’s deepening to make room for larger ships are among the upcoming projects. These initiatives are expected to further strengthen the port’s position as a leading maritime hub in South Asia. With the strong performance in August setting a positive tone for the remainder of the year, VOC Port is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory.
