In a notable development, V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port has reported a 16% increase in container traffic for the first five months of the current fiscal year, signaling strong growth in its operations. The significant rise in traffic underscores the port’s expanding role as a key player in India’s maritime trade, bolstered by increased demand and enhanced infrastructure.
Between April and August, VOC Port handled a total of 3.72 lakh twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) compared to 3.21 lakh TEUs during the same period last year. The sharp increase is attributed to improved operational efficiency, strategic partnerships, and the port’s efforts to attract new shipping lines and services. The port, located in Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a crucial hub for container transhipment in southern India, handling a wide range of cargo, including textiles, electronics, and agricultural products.
Port officials attribute the growth to ongoing modernization projects, including the expansion of berthing facilities and the introduction of state-of-the-art handling equipment, which have streamlined operations and reduced turnaround times. The introduction of new services and enhanced connectivity to key international destinations, particularly in Southeast Asia, has also played a vital role in the traffic surge.
VOC Port, one of India’s 12 major ports, continues to focus on infrastructure development to accommodate the rising container volumes. With plans to deepen its draft and expand capacity, the port is positioning itself as a preferred destination for global shipping lines seeking efficient and cost-effective transhipment solutions in the region.
As India’s maritime trade continues to grow, VOC Port’s performance is a reflection of the broader trends within the industry. The 16% growth in container traffic not only highlights the port’s increasing capacity but also signals its rising importance in the Indian and global shipping landscape.
