Upcoming Vadhvan port draws significant global interest: Sonowal

The new port will cater to a wide range of cargo, including containers, liquid bulk, and general cargo, further diversifying India’s trade portfolio.

As per Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, there is a lot of interest from around the world in the proposed Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra. Set to become one of India’s largest greenfield ports, Vadhvan Port is poised to play a key role in boosting the country’s maritime trade, positioning it as a critical hub for international shipping and logistics.

Sonowal emphasized that the project, strategically located along India’s western coastline, has captured the attention of global investors and maritime operators eager to capitalize on its vast potential. The deep draft of the port, allowing the accommodation of larger vessels, coupled with its modern infrastructure, is expected to enhance India’s competitiveness in global trade. The port’s design aligns with the government’s Sagarmala initiative, aimed at port-led development, and is part of India’s broader efforts to expand its maritime infrastructure and strengthen its presence in global supply chains.

With an estimated capacity of handling 65 million tonnes of cargo annually, Vadhvan Port is set to significantly ease congestion at existing ports, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai. The new port will cater to a wide range of cargo, including containers, liquid bulk, and general cargo, further diversifying India’s trade portfolio. Its construction is expected to generate substantial economic benefits, including job creation, and attract foreign direct investment in the region.

Industry experts have lauded the project as a game-changer for India’s maritime sector, predicting that it will become a pivotal node in global shipping routes. The port is expected to boost India’s connectivity with key trading partners in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, enhancing the country’s ability to participate in transhipment and logistics activities.

As Vadhvan Port moves closer to completion, the global interest underscores India’s growing influence in the maritime sector, reflecting the nation’s push to become a major player in international trade.
