Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurates Tuticorin international container terminal, boosting India’s maritime capacity

The Tuticorin terminal is designed to handle larger container vessels, improving the port’s ability to accommodate global shipping lines.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal officially inaugurated the Tuticorin International Container Terminal in Tamil Nadu, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen its maritime infrastructure. The terminal, part of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, is set to enhance India’s trade connectivity and boost container handling capacity, contributing to the nation’s growing role as a key player in global shipping.

Sonowal highlighted the strategic importance of the terminal in facilitating international trade, particularly with Southeast Asian countries, Europe, and the United States. The facility will not only reduce congestion at other major Indian ports but also provide faster and more efficient services to exporters and importers. Equipped with advanced technology and world-class facilities, the terminal is expected to significantly increase the port’s annual container handling capacity, thus supporting the government’s vision of port-led development under the Sagarmala project.

The Tuticorin terminal is designed to handle larger container vessels, improving the port’s ability to accommodate global shipping lines. This expansion is crucial for industries reliant on imports and exports, such as textiles, electronics, and agriculture, which are expected to benefit from reduced transportation costs and faster delivery times.

The Tuticorin International Container Terminal is also expected to play a pivotal role in supporting the government’s “Make in India” initiative by facilitating smoother export processes for Indian manufacturers. With its strategic location and enhanced capabilities, the terminal will attract global shipping lines, promote international trade routes, and make India a more competitive player in the global supply chain.

Sonowal emphasized that the terminal aligns with the government’s broader agenda of enhancing India’s maritime infrastructure, positioning the country as a hub for international maritime trade. The facility’s inauguration is a testament to the country’s commitment to modernizing its ports to meet the increasing demands of global commerce.
