The Kerala government is fast-tracking the development of a greenfield port in Kannur as part of its strategic effort to enhance maritime infrastructure and drive economic growth in the state. The ambitious project, which has garnered significant attention, is expected to transform Kannur into a key maritime hub, enhancing trade connectivity and generating employment opportunities in the region.
The port, to be constructed on the northern coast of Kerala, is designed to handle a variety of cargo, including containers, bulk, and breakbulk, catering to both domestic and international trade routes. In collaboration with private sector partners, the state government is investing heavily in this project, recognizing its potential to alleviate congestion at ports in Kerala and tap into the region’s growing trade volumes.
P. Rajeev, Kerala’s Minister for Industries, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “The Kannur greenfield port is a critical infrastructure development that will significantly boost the region’s economic prospects. It will not only enhance our state’s maritime capabilities but also create thousands of jobs, directly and indirectly, benefiting the local economy.”
With the completion of the land acquisition and environmental clearance procedures, the project has advanced more quickly than expected. The Kerala government has also initiated the tendering process for selecting construction firms, with work expected to commence in the coming months. The port is slated for completion within the next few years, aligning with Kerala’s broader vision of becoming a leading maritime state in India.
The Kannur greenfield port is part of a larger strategy by the Kerala government to develop port-led industrialization. The project is expected to attract investments in related sectors such as logistics, warehousing, and manufacturing, further driving economic growth in the region. Additionally, the port’s strategic location is anticipated to enhance Kerala’s connectivity with key international shipping lanes, boosting trade with the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
As the project progresses, the Kerala government is also focusing on integrating the port with the state’s existing transportation network, including road and rail links, to ensure seamless connectivity for the movement of goods. This integrated approach aims to position the Kannur greenfield port as a central hub for maritime trade in southern India.
