India has started a thorough assessment of its port infrastructure to improve port efficiency and adopt sustainable practices. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways announced during a high-level meeting to increase capacity and quicken the transition to green energy.

The review’s main objective is to enable major ports to manage rising trade volumes by incorporating ecologically friendly practices. This program is a component of India’s broader endeavour to update its maritime infrastructure to comply with international norms. To lessen the carbon footprint of its maritime industry, the government is giving priority to the development of renewable energy sources, electrification of port machinery, and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.

To satisfy the demands of India’s expanding import and export activities, the Ministry intends to identify areas where capacity can be expanded. Significant upgrades are anticipated for ports like Mumbai, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam to increase their handling capacities and general operational efficiency.

The necessity of creating green port infrastructure, such as installing solar and wind energy systems and using electric cars for on-site transportation, has been underlined by the government. Further research is being done on ways to lower emissions from shipping operations, like using cleaner fuels and providing shore-side power for berthing vessels.

This review is regarded as an essential step in helping India fulfil its commitment to lowering carbon emissions while increasing the competitiveness of its ports in the international arena. The Ministry anticipates that the review will result in implementable projects that will increase port capacity and guarantee long-term, sustainable growth in the maritime industry.
