The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has identified four potential sites for developing port-led cities as part of its ambitious initiative to bolster maritime infrastructure and enhance economic growth. The shortlisted locations are situated along Gujarat’s vast coastline, offering strategic advantages for industrial, residential, and commercial development tied to maritime activities.
This project aligns with the Indian government’s Sagarmala initiative, which seeks to integrate port and industrial infrastructure to stimulate regional economic development. The development of port-led cities aims to create modern urban centres equipped with advanced infrastructure, logistics hubs, and housing, thereby creating a vibrant ecosystem for businesses and residents alike.
The four shortlisted sites—Jodiya, Mithivirdi, Simar, and Pipavav—were chosen after detailed feasibility studies. Each location is expected to serve as a crucial node in Gujarat’s maritime network, supporting shipping, logistics, and export-oriented industries. These port-led cities will not only boost local employment but are also expected to attract significant domestic and international investment, promoting Gujarat’s status as a major hub in global maritime trade.
GMB officials have highlighted that the upcoming port-led cities will be designed to accommodate industrial parks, residential zones, and commercial spaces alongside essential services such as schools, healthcare facilities, and recreational areas.
The project is expected to play an important role in supporting the maritime economy, with the cities providing seamless connectivity to major ports and facilitating the efficient movement of goods. It will also support the Make in India initiative by enhancing the country’s manufacturing and export capabilities.
GMB will now further refine its development plans and seek partnerships with private investors, ensuring the successful execution of these port-led cities, which are poised to redefine Gujarat’s maritime landscape.
