JR East to resume issuance of Suica cards amid chip shortage

The suspension of Suica card issuance, which started in June 2023, affected both unregistered and registered cards, adding to the woes of the daily commuters in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has announced plans to resume issuing Suica cards as early as this fall, following a suspension that began last year due to a global semiconductor shortage. This move aims to alleviate the inconvenience faced by commuters and tourists alike, who have been struggling with alternative payment methods since the halt in card sales.

The suspension of Suica card issuance, which started in June 2023, affected both unregistered and registered cards, adding to the woes of the daily commuters in Tokyo and surrounding areas. The shortage of these IC cards, which are widely used not only for public transportation but also for payments at various stores, vending machines, and restaurants, has led to significant disruptions.

JR East’s decision to prioritize the limited issuance of Suica cards to foreign tourists from January 2024 provided some relief. These cards, available at major stations such as Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Ueno, were restricted to one per person to ensure fair distribution and accessibility for visitors.

The upcoming resumption of Suica card sales marks a significant step towards normalcy for both residents and tourists. JR East is making concerted efforts to manage the chip supply and ensure steady availability. Meanwhile, travellers have been encouraged to use mobile Suica and PASMO services, which remain unaffected by the chip shortage and provide a convenient alternative for contactless payments.

As JR East works to stabilize the supply of Suica cards, the transportation network is expected to regain its efficiency, enhancing the convenience and ease of travel across the region. This development is highly anticipated by the public, who rely heavily on these cards for their daily commutes and transactions.
