On August 27, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Hayashi condemned the recent intrusion of a Chinese military aircraft into Japanese airspace as “completely unacceptable.” Hayashi characterized the incident, which occurred on August 26, as a serious violation of Japanese sovereignty and a direct threat to national security. The aircraft, identified as a Chinese Y9 military intelligence-gathering plane, entered Japanese airspace off the coast of the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture for approximately two minutes.
Hayashi expressed concern over the increasing frequency and intensity of Chinese military activity in the region, stating that Japan would be monitoring the situation closely. This marked the first known breach of Japanese airspace by a Chinese military aircraft, prompting a strong diplomatic response from Tokyo.
The Japanese government has lodged a formal protest with Beijing, demanding measures to prevent future occurrences. Defense Minister Kihara Takashi underscored Japan’s ongoing cooperation with the United States, emphasizing that the two nations are in regular communication and will continue to work closely together to address security concerns.
In response, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has attempted to downplay the incident. Lin SwordLingjian, deputy director of the Information Department, stated that relevant departments are reviewing the situation and reiterated that China has no intention of violating the airspace of any country. Lin emphasized that both countries continue to engage through established communication channels, suggesting that China is seeking to de-escalate the situation.
The incident underscores the growing tensions in the region and highlights the delicate balance of diplomatic and military interactions between China and Japan. As the situation develops, both nations will need to navigate their responses carefully to maintain regional stability.
