The officials stated that 105 individuals lost their lives in Jajarkot, and an additional 52 perished in the neighboring Rukum district. They also confirmed that over 100 people sustained injuries in the earthquake, and search and rescue operations had been completed.
The rescue efforts progressed at a gradual pace because the emergency teams had to tackle the initial challenge of reopening roads that had been obstructed by landslides in numerous areas. It was reported that helicopters and small aircraft were put on standby to assist in the rescue operation.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.6 and had a shallow depth of just 18 kilometers (11 miles). The seismic shocks were felt over a wide area, with reports of tremors being experienced in distant locations such as Kathmandu and even as far as 600 kilometers (375 miles) away in the Indian capital, New Delhi.
Protesters marched toward the parliament building in the capital, Kathmandu, with anti-riot police attempting to contain them. Students and parents are urging an end to the protests to allow classes to resume.
Nepal's civil war from 1996 to 2006 resulted in an estimated 17,000 casualties, and many Maoist leaders, including Prachanda, face accusations of murder and grave human rights violations. The transitional justice Bill introduced in Parliament in March has been criticized for its perceived inadequacy in prosecuting these serious crimes.
