Oli’s China visit to focus on past agreements and BRI projects

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is gearing up for a visit to China, focusing on implementing past agreements, including projects tied to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Preparations for Prime Minister Oli’s upcoming trip to China are underway, with discussions centred on implementing agreements reached during past visits by Chinese President Xi Jinping and previous high-level Nepalese delegations. The visit dates, tentatively proposed for December 2-6, await formal confirmation.

The CPN-UML party’s central secretariat meeting, chaired by Oli, highlighted the need to deliver on commitments made during past state visits. “Our focus will be on implementing the agreements,” stated Pradeep Gyawali, UML deputy secretary general. The accords include multiple infrastructure projects and cooperative efforts with China aimed at economic development.

Ahead of Oli’s visit, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba has been entrusted with coordinating the visit, supported by a recently formed joint mechanism of the ruling coalition, comprising four members each from the UML and Nepali Congress.

Oli’s delegation intends to seek the conversion of a 1,378.74 million yuan (approximately Rs 25.88 billion) loan for Pokhara International Airport into a grant, as the airport faces operational challenges. Additionally, talks may centre on signing an implementation plan for BRI projects and finalizing a major infrastructure project under its framework.

Oli, who chose China over a customary visit to India as his first international trip since returning to the office, affirmed that maintaining balanced ties with both neighbours remains a priority. “Our relationship with India remains good,” Oli emphasized, noting past disputes would not hinder ongoing diplomatic efforts. The visit aims to reflect Nepal’s commitment to both regional cooperation and its economic advancement.
