Keel laid for India’s largest dredger at Cochin shipyard for dredging corporation of India

Cochin Shipyard, one of India’s leading shipbuilders, is constructing the dredger under a strategic partnership with the Dredging Corporation of India.

The keel for the nation’s largest dredger was laid at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The dredger, commissioned by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), marks a major milestone in India’s shipbuilding industry, enhancing the country’s capabilities in maintaining its ports and waterways.

Once completed, the state-of-the-art dredger will be the largest of its kind to operate under Indian ownership and is expected to play a pivotal role in dredging activities along India’s coastline and major ports. This project is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize the maritime sector and improve port infrastructure, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative to boost self-reliance in maritime capabilities.

Cochin Shipyard, one of India’s leading shipbuilders, is constructing the dredger under a strategic partnership with the Dredging Corporation of India. The vessel will be equipped with advanced technologies to perform dredging operations efficiently, which are critical to maintaining the navigability of India’s ports and harbours. This initiative also aims to reduce the reliance on foreign dredging companies, saving substantial costs in the long term.

The dredger will be a vital asset for deepening and maintaining channels in India’s busiest ports, ensuring they can accommodate larger vessels and support increased trade volumes. The vessel is designed to handle a wide range of dredging operations, including maintenance, capital dredging, and land reclamation projects. Once operational, it will significantly reduce India’s dependence on foreign dredging firms, contributing to the nation’s economic growth by ensuring smoother and more efficient maritime operations.

The project reflects India’s commitment to developing its shipbuilding industry while simultaneously addressing the needs of its maritime economy. The dredger is expected to be operational by 2025, significantly contributing to the efficiency of India’s port operations and maritime infrastructure development.
