The Maritime Council has approved plans to establish a vast shipbuilding park spanning multiple states. The decision, announced at the council’s meeting in Goa, is expected to enhance India’s shipbuilding capabilities and solidify the country’s position in the global maritime sector.
The multi-state shipbuilding park will involve coordinated efforts from key coastal states, each contributing land, resources, and infrastructure to create a large-scale industrial complex for shipbuilding and related activities. This initiative is set to boost domestic ship production, reduce reliance on imports, and position India as a significant player in the global shipbuilding market. The park will also provide a platform for collaboration between state governments and private players, promoting technological advancements and innovation in maritime construction.
According to Maritime Council officials, the project is aligned with the Indian government’s broader push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The shipbuilding park will cater to both commercial and defence shipbuilding needs, facilitating the construction of a wide range of vessels, including cargo ships, tankers, and naval ships. The park is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and drive economic growth in participating states.
The council’s decision comes after months of discussions involving maritime stakeholders, industry experts, and government representatives. The shipbuilding park will be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with substantial investments expected from both the government and private sector companies. Additionally, the project will focus on sustainable shipbuilding practices, incorporating eco-friendly technologies and energy-efficient methods in line with global environmental standards.
This ambitious project, once completed, will enhance India’s shipbuilding infrastructure, reduce construction costs, and improve delivery timelines, helping the country become a hub for ship manufacturing in the coming years. The Maritime Council’s approval is seen as a critical step toward realizing India’s maritime ambitions and boosting the nation’s industrial capabilities.
